Puma Alexander McQueen Street Climb Mid

Patrice (Ola Rapace), one of James Bond's enemies in the film SkyFall (2012), wears a pair of brown Puma Alexander McQueen Street Climb Mid sneakers. The shoes can be spotted in one of the promotional photographs for SkyFall.

These Puma hi-top trainers are made from brown leather, white rubber upper/outer sole with brown rubber sole, brown laces. The Alexander McQueen logo on the side of the trainer is not very visible and might have been obscured by the film makers, just as they did with the orange marks on the Converse shoes in Casino Royale.

The collaboration between Alexander McQueen and Puma was launched in 2005. Alexander McQueen's description of its brand seems to fit the Bond films perfectly: "The house that Alexander McQueen built abides by tailoring codes but disobeys social convention. It’s grounded in the romantic side of battlefields and sadomasochism, indulged with leather and eagle wings. The collections’ explorations of identity, nature, and history are heavily influenced by McQueen’s Scottish roots and London apprenticeships."

Adidas Gazelle 2

$

In the workout scenes in SkyFall (2012), James Bond (Daniel Craig) wears a pair of blue Adidas Gazelle 2 sneakers. These iconic Adidas Gazelle II sneakers are available in many colours, and in leather or suede. The version worn by Bond is from the Spring 2011 collection, Adidas Gazelle 2 Dark Indigo with Argentina Blue stripes and White soles, suede upper on rubber soles, as pictured on the left, except that the heel part is also black in the movie. If the heel was made black by the costume department or a specific model is unknown. During rehearsels for SkyFall, Craig does wear shoes with the blue heel as pictured on the left.

Bond is dressed in an all blue outfit, with a blue shirt, blue jogging trousers, and a blue army training jacket. Much of the fitness measurement equipment used in those scenes was provided by Cosmed.

The Gazelle is of the most iconic Adidas trainers ever produced: simple, soccer inspired. Originally released in 1968 as an all-around sneaker, the Gazelle soon became an international sneaker icon.

The exact same sneakers as seen in the film are hard to find. You can try eBay or your local sports shoe stores. By the way, don't buy the sneakers on  www . trainersadidas . co.uk, which is an unofficial and untrusted website.

Stepping into Bond's shoes at Crockett & Jones

English

On a crisp Sunday morning in January I am visiting the London flagship boutique of shoe maker Crockett & Jones, the company that provided James Bond's footwear in the movie SkyFall, to get a pair of these high quality shoes. The famous secret agent wears no less than four different pairs of Crockett & Jones shoes in the film and actor Daniel Craig ordered a customised model for himself.

Crockett & Jones logoThe British shoe company Crockett & Jones is a very appropriate shoe supplier for 007 in SkyFall, a movie that actively promoted Britain and focussed more than usual on Bond's British heritage. Crockett & Jones was founded in 1879 in Northampton by Charles Jones and his brother-in-law, James Crockett. The company is currently still owned by the Jones family, and all shoes are still produced in Northhampton. In 1997, the first retail shop was opened on Jermyn Street in London, a street where other Bond suppliers are based, including Turnbull & Asser, Floris, Church's, John Lobb and Dunhill. Currently Crockett & Jones has two stores on this street and a few more in London, as well as international stores in Paris, Brussels and New York. The shoes are also still sold via a large network of stockists all around the world.

Crockett & Jones 92 Jermyn Street London

Crockett & Jones, 92 Jermyn Street, London

An ever smiling and very helpful store manager Huqstable Mushtaq welcomes me in the flagship store on 92 Jermyn Street. This shop is the largest Crockett & Jones store, showcasing an extensive range of Crockett & Jones shoes for men and women as well as a range of belts and accessories. There is a dedicated area within the shop, featuring a Portland stone fireplace, which houses the ladies collection and is also used for semi-bespoke orders. After a short tour through the shop, we focus our attention on the four shoe models worn by Bond in SkyFall, the Alex, Tetbury, Highbury and Islay.

Crockett & Jones shoes in SkyFall

From left to right: Alex, Highbury, Tetbury, Islay

Huqstable tells me the company was honoured to be selected as the footwear supplier for the film. Luckily the factory is used to producing larger quantities of shoes, because the film's costume department needed approximately 25 (!) pairs for each model. The reason so many shoes are needed is that the shoes get damaged during the filming and Daniel Craig's stunt double needs the same shoes.

The shop is decorated in rich brown wood and greens, and (mostly men's) shoes are lined up on well lit shelves. We first take a look at the Islay, the full brogue derby boot worn by Bond in the Scotland scenes together with his Barbour jacket, N. Peal pullover and All Saints Iggy trousers.

Crockett & Jones Islay

Crocket & Jones Skye (light brown) and Islay (dark brown)

The Islay is available in several colours, Bond wears the dark brown version. The Islay is the only shoe that Bond wears that's made on C&J's 365 last. The other shoes are all last 348. The Islay's are great outdoor shoes especially with the thick Dainite rubber sole.

Crockett & Jones Islay Dainite rubber sole

Dainite rubber sole on the Islay boot

On to the Tetbury, a chukka boot, more subtle than the Islay, with clean design and sharp lines. Bond wears black Tetbury's in opening sequence of SkyFall in Turkey, as well as with his Shanghai outfit. The Tetbury is available in brown, black and also a range of suede colours.

Crockett & Jones Tetbury

The Tetbury in brown and black leather

The Tetbury boot also has the Dainite rubber sole, but at this point it is noted by the store manager that most Crockett & Jones shoe models can be made to order with either leather soles, the Dainite rubber soles, or textured rubber soles (available in a variety of colours) with even more grip than the Dainite. The colour of the leather of the shoe can also be customised to the client's desires.

Crockett & Jones colors

Different colours for the rubber soles and leather are available

Crockett & Jones AlexTwo more formal shoes worn by Bond are the Highbury and the Alex. The black Alex model with leather soles is the most formal, worn by 007 with his Tom Ford tuxedo in the Floating Dragon Casino in Macau, on the Pruva yacht and on Hashima Island.

Crockett & Jones HighburyThe black leather Highbury derby is worn by Bond in the London scenes, together with his Tom Ford suits and coat.

Although I try on several models, I am mostly interested in getting the Tetbury boot, so first the size is determined in the length as well as the width.

Crockett & Jones fitting shoes

The first step in finding the right size

I decide to try on a size 10 and ask for the Tetbury in dark brown leather, a colour which I personally like better than the black and a colour I will be able to wear more often. The shoes are in stock so are brought out shortly and carefully put on. They fit perfectly and after trying on a size 9,5, just to make sure, I decide to take these beautiful Tetbury shoes in size 10.

Crockett & Jones Tetbury size 10

The rubber soul is very sturdy and will last much longer than a leather sole, but both a rubber and leather sole can easily be replaced by Crockett & Jones when the time comes. As with every fine leather shoe, it's best to store the shoes on wooden shoe trees and polish and protect the leather regularly. For in-depth care instructions, visit the Crockett & Jones website.

Crockett & Jones Remmert Tetbury

After wrapping the shoes in the fancy shoe bags and box, it's time to thank the helpful and kind people of Crockett & Jones and step back into the bustling streets of London, carrying the green Crockett & Jones bag with what must be my new favourite shoes!

When you are interested in getting a pair of Crockett & Jones shoes yourself, it is recommended you visit one of the shops in London, Birmingham, New York, Paris or Brussels, where Crockett & Jones is able to offer your the expert personal attention which ensures that your choice of shoe fits perfectly. Crockett & Jones holds detailed size and fitting records of all its regular customers, which helps to verify the exact size requirements.

If you are unable to visit one of the Crockett & Jones shops, they offer a comprehensive mail order service for purchasing Crockett & Jones shoes, belts and accessories. Through this service you may also return shoes to Crockett & Jones for a full repair at the factory.

Church's Chetwynd

James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) wears a pair of Church's Chetwynd shoes in the movie GoldenEye (1995). These Walnut brown full brogue shoes in Nevada leather are worn in the Monaco scenes with the blue wool double breasted Brioni Plinio blazer and woolen sporty sand colour Brioni Snello trousers.

A pair of Church's Chetwynd worn by Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye was auctioned on 19 December 2007 at the Christie's Film & Entertainment Memorabilia auction in London, South Kensington and sold for £1080.

The Chetwynd model is still available at Church's for £395. The current model is slightly different, for example the old model has six pairs of eyelets (holes for the laces) and the current model has five pairs of eyelets. On eBay you can always find a good selection of Chetwynd shoes.

The Chetwynd is not the only shoe model worn in the movie. Bond also wears black Church's Diplomat brogues.

George Lazenby wears very similar brown brogues in the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1967) together with grey pants, white checked shirt and sand color cardigan, but the brand of those shoes is unknown.

Church's Diplomat

In the movie GoldenEye (1995) James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) wears a pair of black Church's Diplomat shoes. He wears these black semi-brogues during the T-55 tank chase and following train scenes, together with a blue bird's eye pattern suit (Brioni model Augusto). The shoes can be seen when Bond kicks in the floor of the train to make a hole where he and Natalya Simonova can escape.

Semi-brogues (also known as half brogues) are characterised by a toe cap with decorative perforations and serration along the cap's edge and includes additional decorative perforations in the center of the toe cap. The half brogue was first designed and produced by shoemaker John Lobb (a brand worn by Bond in Casino Royale) as an Oxford in 1937 in an effort to offer his customers a shoe more stylish than a plain oxford, yet not as bold as a full brogue.

The Diplomat is one of the most popular Church's shoe models. The Church's logo and the words 'Made in England' are heat-embossed on the leather sole. The logo also indicates the town of Northampton, which is the the manufacturing home of Church's.

The Diplomat is still available at Church's for £395, and can also be found at eBay. The current model is slightly different from the model in 1995, for example, as noted on The Suits of James Bond, the new model has only five pairs of eyelets while Bond's shoes had six.

Bond also wears a pair of full brogue Church's Chetwynd in the same movie.

Ordering Church's shoes online

English

Before shopping at Crockett & Jones for a pair of Tetbury shoes, I was in the process of ordering two pair of Church's shoes online, the Enmore and Diplomat models. For people that don't have easy access to actual stores that carry brand like Crockett & Jones or Church's, your only option to acquire a pair of Bond shoes might be to order a pair online, so I thought it would be helpful to share my online experiences here. Shopping online at trusted stores is usually very easy and secure, and online shops are growing as fast as their service. The downside of ordering online is that you can't try on the product to determine the best size for you. But many stores now offer a free return policy, a service that was promoted by Zappos as one of their unique selling points (an interesting read on the subject is Delivering Happiness, by Zappos founder Tony Hsieh) and one of the reasons for Zappos' massive success.

Mr Porter
When I started looking online, I came across the Enmore model on Mr Porter. Technically these aren't exactly Bond's shoes, but the Church's Enmore semi-brogues are very similar to the Church's Diplomat semi-brogues worn in GoldenEye (Pierce Brosnan wears brown Chetwynd brogues and black Diplomat semi-brogues). The brand Church's is definitely a Bond brand: not only does Brosnan wear several models in his movies, but Daniel Craig wears the Ryder III in Philip in Quantum of Solace. It so happened that I had a Mr Porter gift card, which gave me a nice £50 discount. This would be a good time to get them, as Church's shoes are hardly ever on sale.

Since it was my first pair of Church's, I didn't know exactly yet which size would fit (size and fit can depend on the brand or last of the shoe), but decided to go for a size 11. These Enmores are dark brown, a color that I wear more often than black.

church's enmore Mr Porter

When the shoes arrived in Amsterdam, The Netherlands after only a few days, I took them out of the box to try them on. It was clear that they were too large. That's when I could experience the easy return policy of Mr Porter. The shoes came with printed instructions and a DHL form that was already completely filled in. In my online account, I clicked on a button to let Mr Porter know that the shoes would be returned, and which size I would like to receive instead. Then I called DHL, after which they came by (the same day!), checked the contents of the box and went on their way to deliver the shoes back to Mr Porter in the UK.

church's returns mr porter

Only two days later, the new pair of Enmore shoes arrived, this time they fit perfectly. Before walking them in, they were put in the Bond Lifestyle photo studio for a nice portrait. After using these shoes for a while now I can say that they are very comfortable and feel very strong and solid at the same time. The rubber soles of the Enmores will be more durable than leather soles so a bit more practical when wearing them a lot.

Church's Enmore

How to tie dress shoe laces?
When the shoes arrive, the laces are not tied, which is a good opportunity to look deeper into "How to tie dress shoe laces?". There is no straight answer, and on this website you can even find 41 ways to lace shoes, but for a clean, traditional look, the end goal is to have the laces like straight lines. This is how shoes are tied on the Church's website and also, more importantly, how Brosnan wears his Chuch's Chetwynd and Diplomat in GoldenEye and how Daniel Craig wears his Church's Philip in Quantum of Solace. There are several ways to create the straight bar laces look, I decide to go for Straight European Lacing. Take a look at this fantastic website by Ian Fieggen, showing exactly how to get this look (and many other ways of doing it). Select the amount of eyelets and see a step by step visual tutorial. Basically you cross the laces underneath and put them straight on top. This creates a strong pattern, but a bit more messy underneath. Since the uppers of the Church's will close almost completely, this web of laces underneatch will be nearly invisible though.

eBay
Later, a while after I received the Enmore's, I was browsing Church's shoes on the eBay, where new and used Church's are widely available. Once you know your size of a certain brand, it becomes easier to order online since you can be more sure the shoes will fit. After an easy bidding battle, I suddenly became the owner of a pair of black Church's Diplomat semi-brogues.

church's diplomat ebay delivery

Shipping was £15 and the shoes were sent quickly and sufficiently wrapped. When the shoes arrived I was glad to discover that the photos and description matched the item: the shoes were not new, but in mint condition, hardly showing any signs of wear. And the size was also perfect. So for half the price of a new pair, this was definitely a good deal.

church's diplomat bond lifestyle

Black Church's Diplomat

These Diplomats, found on eBay, are in mint condition

Although you can save some money on eBay, or find items that are not produced anymore, shopping on eBay is also much more risky then ordering at a trusted online store. Especially with used items it is hard to see the actual condition of the item and returning is usually a much bigger hassle or not even possible. On eBay you always have to be well aware of who is offering the shoes: does the seller have a lot of recent good feedback? Also check the other listings of the same seller to see what kind of business he or she is in. For more tips on eBay purchases, read the tips at the bottom of this article. Also beware that with any international shipping, import duties or taxes might be charged, which you usually have to pay directly to the delivery person.

Getting the right fit
Although ordering online is easy and on trusted websites like Mr Porter very convenient and a nice experience, I would recommend going to a real shop if you have the chance. The fitting will be best when you can try on different pairs, and Church's offers different widths (medium fit F or the wider fit G) or custom adjustments to make sure the shoes fit perfectly. If a real fit is not posible and your online order also didn't fit after a return, maybe the width of the shoe is the issue. Websites that offer more size options, including different width size for certain models, are the official Church website and Herringshoes, the largest independent stockist of Church's in the UK.

If you have a good or bad experience ordering shoes (or other clothes) online, please post a message below or on this forum thread!

The black boots worn by James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Austria, in the Höffler Klink and the following action sequences with the airplane, are Danner Mountain Light II black boots.

The Danners are made in the USA, have a solid stitchdown construction, Vibram Kletterlift outsoles, and full-leather support. The Mountain Light II comes in two different widths: Men's D (medium) or EE (wide), make sure to get your right size if you order the boots online.

Be warned: do NOT buy from stran.co.uk - a scam website selling fake shoes including replica Danners

During filming of certain scenes, Craig used black anti-slip grips or ice cleats with steel spikes (the rubber with yellow circles and metal spikes) although those are not seen in the final film.

These are the same brand but different model boots that Craig wore at the photocall in Austria.

The boots are different from the ones worn by Bond in the Mr. White meeting scene. In that scene it looks like Bond wears black Crockett & Jones Northcote boots.

At an exhibition of SkyFall and SPECTRE costumes by Jany Temime in Utrecht, The Netherlands in September 2015, the boots were part of the display with Silva's costume, which led to the identification of the brand and model.

The boots are based on the 'Marriott' last, made of leather, lined in red with full leather English insole. The 'Marriott' last is named after Steve Marriott from the Small Faces, a 1960s English rock band from East London.

The Crickett Chelsea boot is currently not produced but it is being reintroduced in Mahogany in the Jeffery-West AW16 season, and can be made to order if requested. Or you can find a few pairs in brown or black on eBay.

With the boots, Silva wears a cream and brown three-piece suit from costume designer Jany Temime made by London tailor Thom Sweeney.

James Fox, Marketing Manager Crockett & Jones

Can you tell us about the history of Crockett & Jones?
Crockett & Jones was founded in 1879, in Northampton, by Charles Jones and his brother-in-law, James Crockett.

Northampton had always been renowned for shoe making in England since the middle ages; starting as a centre for tanning. The abundance of local oak forests provided the oak bark, which was considered the best tanning material at the time and the River Nene was the source of water for this process. The central location of Northampton, en-route to London, gave the town good communications and enabled the tanners to obtain hides from the butchers with ease. After this it wasn’t long before shoe makers naturally gathered where leather was readily available, working out of their homes and in small workshops. By the time that Crockett & Jones was established, shoe makers had begun to join together to open small factories using new machinery that had been developed specifically for the shoe industry during the Industrial Revolution.

The first Crockett & Jones factory in 1879 was a small building in Carey Street, Northampton with 20 employees. The business was successful and expanded rapidly. In the 1890’s the 2nd generation (Harry Crockett and Frank Jones) began to integrate new machinery, which was invented by Charles Goodyear from the USA for stitching the uppers, welts and soles together. This made the process much easier, and faster, and gave rise to the name for the superior construction process that we continue to use today, called ‘Goodyear Welted’.

Towards the turn of the century James Crockett and Charles Jones recognised the need to find a larger factory for continued expansion of the business. In 1897 they bought a new factory in Perry Street, which Crockett & Jones still occupy today.

Around this time most of the shoes were sold in the home market but the company was also exporting a significant volume through-out the world to: Australia, Argentina, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, USA and the Far East.

In 1911 Percy Jones, the brother of Frank Jones, joined the company – this was to be the start of a long serving, 67 year partnership in the business. In 1914 Crockett & Jones footwear was used for the 2nd time on a Shackleton Polar expedition thus emphasising the excellent quality of the shoes and their construction.

In 1924 Crockett & Jones was honoured with Royal Patronage; a visit to the factory in Perry Street by H.R.H The Duke of York (later King George VI) who paid great attention to the shoe making process on his tour around the factory. This visit sparked much national press interest and people crowded the streets to get a glimpse of The Duke.

In 1927 Gilbert Jones, the son of Frank Jones, started at Crockett & Jones becoming the 3rd generation of the Jones family involved in running the business. By this stage the company employed over 1000 people and production had reached record levels of 15,000 pairs per week; the majority of which were women’s shoes and boots.

During the 2nd World War Crockett & Jones manufactured over a 1 million pairs for the armed forces. They were under instructions from the government to switch the majority of the production to military footwear; making officers’ shoes and boots for the army, navy and air force. To produce this volume many retired men and married women came back to work to join in the war effort.

After the war in 1947 Richard Jones, son of Percy Jones and grandson of founder Charles Jones, joined the business. Today Richard is still involved as Chairman and imparts his vast knowledge of shoe making to everyone.

Jonathan Jones, son of Richard Jones, joined the company in 1977, the same year that Richard was appointed Managing Director. At this time, a decision was taken to re-focus the business. From now onwards they would concentrate on producing men’s high quality Goodyear Welted footwear and developing export sales in Europe, USA and Japan.

As the business began to build again over the next 15 years, exports reached 70% of the overall production and in 1990 Crockett & Jones was awarded the coveted Queens Award for Export Achievement. Crockett & Jones continued to supply some of the world’s best known “own label” collections but now as Managing Director, Jonathan also wanted to increase the ‘Crockett & Jones’ branded distribution. As part of this strategy it was decided to re-visit the company’s long standing interest in retail. In 1997 Crockett & Jones opened their 1st retail shop in Jermyn Street, London. Over the next 14 years another 10 retail shops and concessions were opened by Crockett & Jones across London, Birmingham, New York, Paris and Brussels.

In 2004 the factory in Perry Street was designated as a Grade II listed building, in order to preserve the history of the shoe trade in Northampton. The building has, in fact, changed very little since the 1930’s. In 2005 Nicholas Jones, Jonathan’s brother, joined the company as Production Director and Jonathan, as Managing Director, concentrates on strategy, sales and development. In 2006 Philippa Jones, Jonathan’s daughter, started in the family business as the 5th generation of the Jones family.

The fact that the business remains in the hands of the family who started it, ensures that the standards of the past are maintained today and lends a more personal touch to the fine shoes that they produce.

What does Made in Britain mean in the case of Crockett & Jones?
Made in England means everything to Crockett & Jones and rather a lot to many of our customers. Much of the shoe trade has gradually either been moved abroad and the product cheapened, or been so heavily affected by factories abroad that the brands no longer exist in England.

In the 1950’s there were roughly 50 shoe factories in Northampton Town making it a great industry, today there are just five. Of the five remaining, two are owned by luxury groups. We are now the only family owned and managed Goodyear Welted shoe factory in England.

crockett jones clicking

Making Crockett & Jones shoes. Step 1. Clicking

Are Crockett & Jones shoes completely made in Britain?
Absolutely, all of our Goodyear welted shoes are 100% made in our factory in Northampton, England.

crockett jones closing

Step 2. Closing

What is happening exactly inside the facility?
Our factory in Northampton houses our head office (and worldwide) operations where all Directors of the business tirelessly continue their work to ensure Crockett & Jones remains on the steady path that we find ourselves on today. For the most part, Crockett & Jones is a manufacturer, and our Northampton factory (in England) is where the magic really happens. I often describe it as Charlies’ Chocolate factory for shoes! It comprises of eight departments in total: Pattern Cutting, Clicking, Closing, Preparation, Lasting, Making, Finishing and Shoe Room. I won’t take you through each one but if you are interested in finding out more about the working of a Goodyear welted shoe factory, and the level of skill that goes into each shoe, I recommend taking a few minutes to watch our In the Making video on our website.

crockett jones preparation

Step 3. Preparation

How many people are working at Crockett & Jones?
We currently have about 300 staff in the factory, with another 100 or so across our retail, office and management staff. It is a busy environment to work in, and we seem to be growing each year. A rare success story in our trade that we are working very hard to continue.

crockett jones lasting

Step 4. Lasting

When were the following models (worn by Bond) first introduced: Alex, Tetbury, Highbury, Islay, Camberley, Norwich, Radnor
All of the styles that were chosen to feature in the James Bond films were existing styles, outlining the strength and depth of our current range. The newest style was Camberley and given that it is a Monk strap version of our famous Tetbury, we were not surprised to see them choose this style.

crockett jones making shoe

Step 5. Making the shoe

The only style that we had to pull from our wholesale collection was Radnor, a Goodyear welted version of Snowdon (Veldtschoen construction). They wanted a Snowdon type boot, but given the demand from the previous film, there was no way we would have been able to produce the volume of Veldtschoen contructed boots (a complicated process), so they were happy to take the very sturdy Goodyear welted version instead - Radnor.

crockett jones finishing

crockett jones finishing 1

Step 6. Finishing

What makes the Crockett & Jones shoes stand out from its competition?
We do not have too many competitors around our price point. Given the volume of shoes (size of factory) that we are able to produce, we offer a very fairly priced product given the materials that we use to produce them (European Calf on the whole). Our Managing Director is extremely focused on this (offering value for money), and is defiant about continuing to use European Calf in the making of our shoes. To buy a pair of shoes at the quality of Crockett & Jones from another maker, you may need to pay £300 - £400 more.

Ultimately, if you have highly skilled craftsmen and women and you use the highest quality materials available, the rest come down to experience of design, style and finally taste.

crockett jones shoe room 1

Step 7. Shoe Room

What are some of the advantages of producing in the UK?
Experienced, knowledgeable and highly skilled staff, but the ‘Made in England’ carries with it an incredible amount of respect.

crockett jones shoe room 2

Step 7. Shoe Room

What are some of the challenges of producing in the UK?
Business rates, factory running costs and availability of the skilled staff I mentioned above. As our industry has reduced, the number of skilled suppliers and skilled staff has also reduced.

What is your favourite Bond film?
Casino Royale. It is the epitome of everything I have grown up to love about James Bond.

Who is your favourite James Bond actor?
Daniel Craig. He has good taste in shoes!
